Find the MacGuffin

The MacGuffin is an AM transmitter, wired to an ex-Retropod Sony Sports Walkman, playing a continuous-loop answering machine cassette, all stuffed inside a weatherproof Pelican case.

The MacGuffin broadcasts a short message on AM 1700. The message contains the secret access code you need to find out where and when Guerilla Drive-In movies will be shown.

Listen to the MacGuffin:
The secret message this year was generously recorded by Wilmington's Spinto Band. The Spinto version of Brazil will be on their new EP, coming out in August.

What You Should Do

  1. Find the MacGuffin. Last year, the MacGuffin was hidden at Jimmy Johns Pipin' Hot, on top of the big model train case.
  2. Tune in to AM 1700, listen carefully to the message, and write down the access code.
  3. Take a picture of yourself at the MacGuffin's Secret Location. Include enough background so that it's clear where you are. You don't have to include the MacGuffin itself in the picture.
  4. Email the picture and the access code to me at .

If you follow special instructions in the radio message, you can unlock a SPECIAL BONUS that will add a "Z" prefix to your GDI member number!

Also, Nick Krill of the Spinto Band tells me that the code itself has a secret meaning for Spinto fans, but that nobody has deciphered it yet. Be the first!

And for Zeke's sake, TRY TO LOOK HAPPY in the picture, will you? If I showed you some of the pictures I get, you'd think I was running a boredom seminar for people who are bored, and also angry, like they couldn't find any Meatballs in their spaghetti. You're a Guerilla Drive-In Adventurer, canoe at least smile a little bit?

Sam B., Tom F. and Sara A.
find the MacGuffin in June, 2009 and become
GDI members 107, 108, and 109!

What Happens Then?

Once you've proved that you've found the MacGuffin, you'll be assigned a sequential, immutable, and eternal Guerilla Drive-In member ID number.

You'll get an email the week before each showing, describing exactly what'll be shown and where.

You'll also get an exclusive, can't-be-purchased "Found the MacGuffin" Nerd Merit Badge!

Hints and Questions

The MacGuffin's purpose is not to exclude anybody. Rather, it's to make things more fun, and act as a sea anchor on sudden, big crowds. I won't tell you the location, but I'll drop all kinds of corny hints if you're stuck. And I will add you to the comp list for a while if you want to know about upcoming shows. Email me at or DM @guerilladrivein on Twitter.
