Cannonball Run II (1984) at the
Marsh Creek Speedway
THE NOTE

Cannonball Run

"The popcorn's in the lobby. The nuts are on the screen."

Here it is, the epitome, the apex, the apotheosis of Eighties screwball comedies. You'll see Jamie Farr in a keffiyeh and Burt Reynolds falling out of a biplane. You'll see Jackie Chan making a Mitsubishi sedan fly. You'll see shiny skintight jumpsuits, blow-dried hair and cleavage, and color-changing Lamborghinis. And that's in the FIRST FOUR MINUTES. Ninety seconds later, you'll get Shirley MacLaine in a nun's habit throwing a left hook, and Don Knotts getting slapped by an orangutan. Cannonball Run II is the last appearance of the Rat Pack on screen, with both Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra's final appearances in film!

Rain location and Time: THE NOTE in West Chester at Seven O'Clock

Go-Kart racing got rained out at the Marsh Creek Speedway, so we're gonna be showing the movie at Bam Margera's new club THE NOTE instead. There's four bands booked tonight, so we've gotta start earlier. Be there at seven o'clock, or you'll miss the color-changing Lamborghini! But show up any time you like.

The The Marsh Creek Speedway

Karts in the garageJust one year after Cannonball Run II came out, stock-car champ Ronnie Paulson opened the Marsh Creek Grand Prix, a paved go-kart track about seven miles north of Downingtown. Ronnie died in 2001, but there's still go-kart racing every friday night from April through September. With lights, bleachers, and concessions. I'm really looking forward to checking this out.

There's no longer any go-kart rental at Marsh Creek Speedway (insurance), but the rental karts still operate -- they're pictured at left. These seventies-era masterpieces of the fiberglasser's art are the the ABSOLUTE COOLEST things I've ever seen. I'd suggest that you come out just to get your picture taken in one of these things. Did I mention they're for sale? This is probably a great way to save gas. I bet a two-stroke go-kart gets FANTASTIC mileage...

Racing at Marsh Creek starts at about 7:15. The concession stand has soft drinks, burgers, hot dogs, anything you could possibly want to keep warm while you're watching Joe Theismann punch a dude AND SIMULTANEOUSLY watch a fourteen-year-old skim along at fifty miles an hour in a badass futuristic kart with a seat that's a scant half-inch off the ground.

Just to be clear, you will not have a chance to drive a kart on the track; Marsh Creek racers bring their own. But they just might let you wave the checkered flag! Especially if you wear a shiny jumpsuit.

What to Bring

Rain: if it rains, we'll show the movie, just somewhere else, probably in West Chester. I'll post updates (if any) to this page by 4:30PM Friday afternoon, and send out an email if there's a change.

Wheelchair access: Yes!
If you could, you know, show up in an ambulance, that would be GREAT.
