16MM Movies at Secret Locations

Movies are shown in glorious, colorful sixteen millimeter film, through a 1970s workhorse Eiki school projector. The projector is mounted on a 1977 BMW R100/7 sidecar rig.

The movies are shown in appropriate locations — Repo Man in a junkyard, Caddyshack on the links, Ghostbusters in a haunted fort.

In order to get the title and location of each movie before the show, you'll need to be on the members' list. In order to get on the members' list, you'll need an access code. In order to get the access code, you'll need to find the MacGuffin.

Get on the Members List

Find the MacGuffin, tune in to 1700 AM, and write down the access code it's broadcasting. Take a picture of yourself at the Secret Location where you found the MacGuffin. Then email in that access code and the picture. That'll confirm your spot on the list.

Once you're on the list, you'll get email with the movie titles and locations. The notification for each movie will go out the week of the showing. You'll be given a street address, GPS coordinates, and any additional instructions you'll need. We're almost always wheelchair-accessible and dog-friendly.

You only need to sign up once to get notified for all the movies. And you're welcome to bring friends.

Why Do This?

I think this is a fun, adventurous way to see a movie — invest some effort, maybe a little bit of risk (am I going to the right place? Am I gonna get rained on?) and some inconvenience, and a movie that you can see any night of the week on basic cable is suddenly funny again. There's parts of Meatballs that I forgot existed. Watching ghosts escape from their laser containment grid seems extra dramatic with floodlit, strobe-flashing 747s landing directly overhead.

Plus, we sometimes get to do incredibly awesome stuff, like drive the ball-return cart around and hit golf balls at it while watching Caddyshack!
